It is usually seen when a persons smiles and tends to deepen, as a person ages and becomes more prominent and stagnant on the face which makes it noticeable due to the sagging and thinning of skin.

What is the cause of deep folds?

The nasolabial folds are part of the human face and it is not due to signs of age or any medical condition, they only become deeper when the skin sags or thins out. That’s when one can notice these folds on the sides of the face.

Some factors that may cause nasolabial folds to become deep/prominent are:-

  • Smoking
  • Environmental factors like pollution and sun exposure
  • Rapid weight gain or weight loss.
  • Ageing due to which collagen is lost making the skin look weak and thin.
  • Fat loss around the cheek area which gives the saggy appearance.
Which age group is usually affected?

The age when they start becoming deep is 30-35 yrs, that’s when the signs of ageing start showing on the face. They become more prominent as one ages further .
