What is lipoma?

Lipoma is a skin lump or a fatty tissue that grows under the skin, over growth of such fat cells can cause lumps. It can appear on any part of the body but especially seen on neck, shoulders, forearms, arms, thighs. Lipoma can be seen at any age but in children it is rarely found. lipoma are non- cancerous and usually don’t require any treatment unless they star bothering you.

What are the causes of lipoma?

The actual cause of Lipoma is not known but it can be carried from parents. It is known as familial multiple lipomatosis. Lipoma can also be seen after the injury that involves substantial impact on that particular area and yes some studies has said that if a person has such medical conditions (mentioned below) can also develop Lipoma such as :-

  • Gardner’s syndrome
  • Madelung’s disease
  • Cowed syndrome
  • Adiposis dolorosa.

Things to Know

Lifestyle plays a very important role in treating any health condition; change in lifestyle can help in combating many health conditions. People who are obese, have high cholesterol, diabetes, liver disease and glucose intolerance tend to develop lipoma. So lipoma usually don’t require any treatment but one can visit a doctor if the size increases, if it becomes painful, becomes red in colour, if it turns hard or any visible change that are unusual. These are few indications where one can visit doctor .
Lipoma can be seen in people who have a family history of lipoma. Hence, it can be seen at the age of 40-60 years old.
No there is no gender predilection for this condition; it can be seen both in male and female.

Yes genetic plays a very important role as lipoma is seen in people where there is a family history of lipoma.

Lipoma are usually harmless until they start bothering oneself one does not usually treat them.

No there is no specific medications that can treat lipoma as only surgical method can get rid of them.

The different treatment options to treat lipoma are:-

Surgery:- This is one of the most commonest method of treating lipoma. Surgery is usually done when lipoma is large in size and keeps growing in size. This is done under local anaesthesia and this method is known as excision.

Liposuction:- This is another method liposuction involves needles attached to a large syringe Before the procedure, the area is usually numbed, as lipoma are fat based so this procedure helps a lot in treating them.

Steroid injections:- These injections which are given on affected area helps in shrinking the lipoma but usually does not complete remove it.
