Chemical Peel/ Glow Peel
What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are mildly acidic lotions, gels or creams which contain a single or a combination of active ingredients that help rejuvenate the skin surface. They are an easy and effective way to keep your skin looking its best. The active ingredients present in the peel penetrate your skin and create an even and controlled shedding of the superficial layers of damaged skin cells. This allows new layers to be exposed and creates a fresh appearance to the skin surface. In addition, new cells and collagen are stimulated, creating a more even tone. After just one session, you will notice a visible improvement in your skin’s brightness, clarity, and overall health.

Why do we need this treatment?

Our skin is the largest organ of the body and it is always in contact with the environment. So obviously it comes in contact with the environmental allergens & pollutants which can have a detrimental effect on the skin. These stimuli can cause damage to the skin in the form of

  • Tanning or pigmentation
  • Premature ageing
  • Fine lines or wrinkles
  • Sensitivity of the skin
  • Dull or lustreless skin
  • Rough & dehydrated skin

Chemical peels can really help you to revert all these changes on your skin and get the youthfulness and suppleness of your skin back.

Things to Know

It depends on the indication and the type of peel done. For example Salicylic acid peel is done for acne once in 7- 10 days and generally 2-3 sessions are good enough to control the outburst of acne easily, which even fails to respond to antibiotics. On the other hand yellow peel is usually done once in a month. It also depends on the strength of the peels done.
Chemical peels are very safe when done under the supervision of a dermatologist. One should always consult a dermatologist first before going for a peel. Depending upon the indication peels can be done from teenage to older age group. Mostly Salicylic acid peel or black peel are used for acne control in teenagers.
Peels come under a category called collagen induction treatment or CIT. Here we give a controlled injury to the skin and in response to the injury skin heals, by forming new cells, collagen and elastin. It also induces Neo vascularisation i.e formation of new blood vessels, which improves blood circulation and improves the quality of your skin. The nature of the injury in this treatment is chemical, but this injury is a controlled injury so it is very safe and doesn’t cause any damage to your skin.
Chemical peels are very safe treatments as the nature of the injury which we give is controlled. The only risk in the treatment is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is temporary and can be cured with medication.
Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a rare side effect which can happen after chemical peels. This happens when patients fail to follow proper instructions especially regarding the use of sunscreen. This responds well to treatment and is temporary. Some patients can have milia or dry skin as well after the peels. So it is always advisable to get peels done under the supervision of a qualified and experienced dermatologist. Usually people get these treatments done at parlours and cosmetic clinics these days, which obviously can lead to trouble.
The effects of chemical peel is lasting and whatever collagen it induces is going to stay there, but yes ageing is an ongoing process and for maintenance of the results you need to repeat these treatments as advised by your dermatologist.
This is a myth, in fact chemical peels increase the strength of your skin and it also reduces the sensitivity of the skin. It should only be done when it is indicated and the procedure should always be done under the guidance of a qualified and experienced dermatologist.
According to Dr. Ruchi Agarwal, MD, chemical peels have so many benefits and multiple indications that they fit in almost every skin care regimen. This is one of her favourite treatments as it gives her the flexibility to treat different skin types & multiple skin issues in one go. Dr. Agarwal is a leading dermatologist with almost two decades of experience and she had done her thesis in chemical peels itself and has published research papers in international journals on this topic.
Yes, usually skin problems like dullness, open pores, pigmentation, acne & scars need different types of treatments and it is advisable to combine different treatments to achieve optimal results. Usually, we at Satya combine chemical peels with derma roller or derma pen in the same session. It improves the end result. Other treatments like fractional laser, PRP, microdermabrasion, hydra facial, MNRF or Carbon facial can also be combined on the advise of your dermatologist.
Use of make should be avoided for a couple of days. But in most of the peels light make up can be used after the procedure, depending upon the type of peel being done. You need to consult your dermatologist for this.
Depending upon the type of peel used the downtime of the procedure differs. In most of the peels there is little shedding of the skin for a couple of days, which is mostly unnoticeable. In some peels, like yellow peel (depending upon the strength used), sometimes there is massive peeling of the skin for 4-5 days.
Chemical peel is a painless procedure and some times you can have a mild tingling sensation after or during the procedure. No anaesthesia or numbing is required prior to the procedure.
For most the chemical peel procedures you need only 5-10 minutes. So the procedure is pretty quick and frequently done as a lunch time quick procedure. However some peels like pumpkin peel takes around 1-1.5 hours time.
You can resume your activities immediately after the procedure. You may also go out in sun, but use of sunscreen is mandatory. Even if you are not going out in sun, you have to apply sunscreen.

Chemical peel is a very scientific and medically proven treatment, which is a very effective solution for so many skin issues. Depending upon the strength of the compound used, it is superficial or deep. This treatment doesn’t involve use of any bleaching agent unlike the facials done at parlours.

Many parlours & cosmetic chain clinics are doing chemical peels these days, which is very risky and is not advised at all. One should always consult a dermatologist for chemical peels.

The strength and depth of the chemical peel used depends on the condition being treated as well as the amount of improvement desired. Salicylic acid peel, Yellow peel, Black peel, pumpkin peel, phenol peel, phytic peel, glycolic peel & TCA peel are some important peels amongst many others which we do at Satya clinic.

We use our own peels made by Dr. Shail Gupta & Dr. Ruchi Agarwal, MD. These are unique peels made with years of experience and we have treated more than 10000 patients over a span of almost two decades.

Chemical peels remove the damaged outer layer of skin and allow healthy new skin to form in its place. They leave the skin looking smoother and more uniform in color. Chemical peels can be used over any part of the body including face, neck, chest, back, arms, forearms and hands to improve sun damage, mild scarring and fine lines, and irregular pigmentation.

Your skin is first thoroughly cleansed, and then 1-2 coats of the peeling agent are applied on the skin uniformly. You may experience mild tingling or burning sensation during the procedure. Depending on the kind of peels we are using, it is either neutralised after a few minutes or left on the face for a few hours.

After the peel, some patients may have mild redness which settles in a few hours. The skin may feel a little tighter & mild peeling may be noticed in a few days following the peel.

  • You can wash your face with a mild cleanser and water twice daily, then gently pat dry and apply moisturiser.
  • Do not pick off any flakes or scabs. Apply moisturiser liberally and as often as required to keep the treated skin moist.
  • Keep applying sunscreens 3-4 times a day, avoid any sun exposure without applying sunscreen while the skin is peeling, not even five minutes.
  • During the healing process, it is normal to feel occasional itching and burning.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and hot, humid conditions, as these may irritate the healing skin.
  • After all the skin has peeled, continue to use sun protection and sun avoidance measures
